Why I hate living in present times

Let off some steam here about living modernly!

For me, I hate living in present times because of not being able to dress up all retro, like in mini skirts, mod dresses, and scooter skirts without being labeled as living in the past or dressing up like it's Halloween. I really hate it! I can't do my make up with the cut-crease line, or else I will get comments about it. I just want to go about on my own without the attention... I also prefer furniture and styles from the 1950's and 1960's and 1970's. I wish I could wear bell-bottoms and lovebeads and a daisy chain head crown. I hate that I can't find the styles I like in stores at all. I would need to search vintage stores that sell these items at a high price. I don't like how records today aren't even affordable - they cost way more than compact discs.

I don't like seeing or hearing about thug/rap culture. I really don't like hearing about misogynistic messages said about women. It makes me feel unsafe knowing that teens are listening to "music" about pain, sex, guns, violence, and then it makes it cool to have that tough guy attitude. I want the innocence of the '50s back without the discrimination of people of non-white color skin. I hate that being slutty and dumb is glamorized instead of being classy and demure.

Maybe it's because I live in NYC, where all cultures and people of different backgrounds are combined into a small island of 8+ million people. The majority of people here are black and hispanics, and south and east asians, while most Jewish people go to their own schools made for them.

I guess I could have my own style too but I feel like an alien not knowing anyone who is similar as me. I feel like a child of the past trapped into an explosion of mass media and made up cultural conventions, and there is little I can do about it.

Where do I go to slow dance or "disco" without it being a one-time theme for Halloween or where they suddenly change the music to the top-40 hits that mention sweat, sex, and poppin' your booty? I cringe.

Hell, even television programs and talk radio is all about twerking or whatever's the latest dance or song trend. It disgusts me that today's bestselling music is just repackaged hypersexual female popstars or douchebag rappers.

I really apologize for not being stronger than this. I really have the victim mentality when I know if I were to give someone the advice about this subject, I would say, "Who cares what anyone thinks? If you've got the vision, then rock it, and if it makes you unique, then more power to you." Yeah, yeah, Practice what you preach. This is just a little rant for when I want to let off a little steam from my narrowmindedness.

Plusss, if I want to talk about my favorite artists of the past, people MY AGE or younger would be like, "Who?" or would call me grandma or whatever... ugh I hate what the present times are feeding us. Most of it is NOT good. at. all. !!!

Candy O, I Agree with your Rant!!!! Except for the discrimination of people of non-white color skin!! I Long for the days of the 50's 60's and the 70's even! Everything wasn't Truly like living in a "Leave It To Beaver" world back then. But, not too far from it either! I Hate the Horror of Today's Culture and Society!!! I would miss having a computer and the Internet. But, Everything was so much Better back in those days!!! EVERYTHING!!!!

I used to laugh at my elders back then, who said how bad things are getting these days!! And WOW, I sure know now why they felt that way back then!!! Because These Days are a Horrible Nightmare compared to then!! "Things have gotten exponentially worse from those days till now"!!!! I Agree with you...I HATE what the present times are feeding us!!!!! Almost ALL of it, is NOT good at all!!!!!!

And Don't Apologize for Not being Stronger than this!!! It's Very Hard Not to have the Victim Mentally living in These Times!!! It's a matter of Survival!! To Speak your mind on these matters or to try to give someone some advice about this subject.....can get you Mentally Bullied or perhaps Physically Bullied these days for Really speaking your mind about this!! Our Culture has come down to this!!

I Miss the Innocence of those times back then too!!!! But, there is little we can do about it!!!

Not only being blasted by mass media of all the horrid made up culture of today. Take a Look at our Leaders in Washington D. C.  Look at what kind of creatures these are!! And what kind of unheard of Terror they're willing to unleash on the less fortunate, just to fill their own messed up egos and messed up ideologies and to keep them in power and on their ongoing gravy train! "Just a handful of these Horrible Creatures have the power" and are holding the powerless less fortunate people in this country hostage to their whims!! It's Very Scary and Oh So Very Unfair and Unthinkable!! This is what these times have come down to!!! So Horrible!!! So Horrible in So Many Ways!!! These Times!!! :-(((

I can't thank you enough for creating this topic, Candy O! And you already know how much I agree with you, so I'll spare you all from my own rant! LOL

Every second of the day, I think about how much I hate this generation with a passion and wish I was living in the past.

I can't stand everything from the stupid music to the crappy celebrities to all the annoying modern technology (iPods, iPads & Tablets, Kindles & E-Readers, Cell Phones & Smart Phones, XM Sirius Satellite Radios, Digital Cable Television, HDTV's, Blu-Ray and UltraViolet, etc...) UGH!

I'm so old fashioned! I prefer to live without any of that crap!!! It's like I'm living in a very different time eventhough I'm still in this time, like being in both at the same time! If that makes any sense? Sorry if I got a bit confusing by saying "time" alot! LOL!!!

The only reason I even use a computer and CDs/DVDs is to enjoy the past!

I Agree with everything you said Sadie!!! And the only reason I like using a computer is being in touch with you guys and the Sites BeatleGirl made for us to Enjoy!! Also, using my computer and CDs/DVDs to enjoy the past!!! I Too long for the more simple ways of life like "Leave It To Beaver"!!!

Me too!!! LoL I actually have no idea how to use some of modern technology. I'm that old fashioned! ;-P

I didn't even have a computer at home until 2005. I've been interested in retro stuff since 1997 :-)

I think this topic is a good idea for both older people who miss the good old days and younger people who wish they were living in a different generation sometimes! :-)

LOL!! Me Too!! I never even had a smartphone! ;-) My TV in My room is still an old analog tube TV. But, it's still working fine for me. My Mother has a Flat Screen TV in the living room. It was left to her from my Aunt who passed away. My MP3 player is an old cheap iPod shuffle. LOL! I Miss my Old tube stereo equipment and record player!! Had a much better sound, like the Music of the old days!! 50's, 60's, and 70's Music was Raw and Great!!! The music had feeling, meaning, and was fresh and new that reflected those times! Those times were so much Better in so many ways!! The Music these days is such Crap and Noise!! Either it's rap crap, or dance music that reminds me of Plastic disco music on speed! I Hate it!!

I had an old DOS computer in the late 80's. Then had a PC running Windows 3.1 in 1991. Then went to Macs from 1995 until last year when I went to a Windows 7 PC again. I got the computers in the beginning for Work purposes and went to trade shool in the late 70's for computer technology. I only use my computer these days for enjoyment, keeping in touch with you guys, and ocassional shopiing for items that I need, etc.
