Here you can share tips and tricks on how to live a "hippie" environmentally conscious lifestyle  ^_^

(Lifestyle meaning food to eat, the material of clothing you buy, or recycling old stuff into DIY etc.)

If you don't think you can be a vegetarian/vegan, at least have a "Meat Free Monday" (Paul suggestion). Go at least one whole day without eating meat! :-)

Love for the Earth and for each other are the core values of what a hippie possess, I believe. Personally, I do not care for taking recreational drugs, or not bathing, or being too natural that you start to neglect your grooming habits. I'd like this topic to be about sharing what you know or do to be more in touch with nature & love. Whether it's caring for your pet friends or cleaning up by not littering, or whatever, I'd like to read about it! I'm doing my best to be more green because I know that our Earth is getting more polluted by the day and it seems endless with the amount of human population which is still on the rise of 7 billion, we, as a whole need to conserve as much as possible to try and save this planet and those living on it. Sounds good? Good!

This is borderline vegan - but to stay animal friendly, here is a list of cosmetic companies that do NOT test on animals. http://www.logicalharmony.net/cruelty-free-vegan-brand-list/

These ingredients listed here, if you find them means that some type of animal or insect part is in your beauty product: http://www.logicalharmony.net/animal-ingredient-list/

Also, if you see "Carmine" in any of your food or beauty products... it is red coloring from crushed bugs from Africa. (Click here if your eyes can take it.) More info on this color additive: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-carmine.htm

Sadie, I wholeheartedly agree! Paul and the MFM (Meat Free Monday) team suggests that non-vegetarian people have 1 day of the week to be meat-free, and that is Monday. They chose Monday because they see that if you start something on a Monday, you will most likely continue it throughout the week.
This is a great way to introduce guilt-free food! I only need to remind myself that an animal had to die in blood just for me to feed on, but then again, it is survival, and sometimes I have no choice. Sounds gross talking about it, but the food chain/web exists for a reason.

LOL I find this hippie fact funny. Don't blame me for my dark humour - "Because hippies adopted a notion of freedom, many experimented with drugs in order to achieve a euphoric state of mind. Unfortunately, several hippies of the sixties developed addiction problems and died from drug overdose." From: http://www.loti.com/hippies_life.htm

A lot of people -- teenagers and young adults died because of drug overdose, including famous musicians and actors, back then and up to now... I do not encourage that type of drug addiction. Music for me is my drug, but I do hope it kills me someday so I can die happily. Okay, I have a weird interest in death. I should stop now! Anyway, ....

I like reading eBooks (on my tablet) now instead of reading or buying new paperbacks and hardcovers. It just saves gas for the trucks and manufacturing, and ink. Also buying books made with recycled paper beats companies chopping down trees, ruining the rainforests' ecosystem.

Sounds VERY GOOD!!!!! :-)

I liked the Hippies Link!! LOL! ;-) Thanks Candy O! Very True about the Drugs!!
So, you have a weird interest in death. Like Jim Morrison and Woody Allen.  ;-) You said Music for me is my Drug. Very Cool!! :-)

Reading eBooks is Very Green! Hopefully someday it will be the norm!!

About the Vegan thing. I Love Animals!! But, I have to admit I love eating meat and chicken. :-(

LOL TLC NEEDS TO MAKE THIS TOPIC INTO A REALITY TV SHOW! "MY HIPPIE LIFESTYLE"

I don't blame you BBBJ! Some people like meat, some people don't. For me, I'd rather eat organically grown vegetarian food, but I don't always have that choice. I'm more into junk food like greasy pizza and mozarella sticks or fried foods, so I'm not a health junkie as I'd like to be.

Yeah, I do have an interest in death. Thinking about it does not make me sad, but losing people because of it does. I always wonder if we continue to live in other forms or do our bodies just decay and go back into the Earth.

Yep, I found it convenient reading eBooks for many reasons. Technology makes doing things faster and easier. I just feel sad that humans chop down trees for their own gain, which is destroying animals' home and our home on Earth!

I do like the fact that broken electronics can be recycled and plus they can be resold and someone will buy them!

One thing my apartment building is not green on is that there is no recycling here. We just use plastic bags and throw our garbage in the open dumpsters. It disturbs me knowing that garbage will just be buried under soil and that plastic doesn't disintegrate for 1,000 years. ...Plastic bottles and caps and plastic bags just float around in the ocean, trapping animals like turtles. It sickens me. :( Garbage does not decompose for many many years. So it's stuck buried somewhere even after you die!

Sweden is a good example of what other countries should follow to get rid of garbage efficiently. They have incinerators that burn waste to create heat and electricity. Another good way is to use organic products and composting. I hope more and more young people are educated with reduce, reusing, and recycling. I see some adults and young people outside that just throw their garbage on the gutter or on the sidewalk. It baffles me that they never stop and think about WHO has to pick that up! I have been to Canada before in Vancouver and that place is just SO clean, it depresses me that NYC pavements are filled with black spots of gum and cigarette butts. Well, that's it for now.

I just found out that these Red African bugs are beetles that 70,000 of them have to be killed and crushed to make at least 1 pound of red dye which mostly come from their abdomen of their fertilized eggs. I am just flabbergasted at this fact! "The real story behind Carmine" http://differenceisreal.wordpress.com/2009/01/02/the-real-story-beh...

Re: "TLC NEEDS TO MAKE THIS TOPIC INTO A REALITY TV SHOW! "MY HIPPIE LIFESTYLE"

LOL LOL!! ;-)

Organically grown vegetarian food is hard to find sometimes and is usually expensive. So, I see why you don't always have that choice Candy O!! I'm more into junk food and greasy fried foods as well. LOL! So, I see you're not a health junkie as you'd like to be too! Junk food is readily available, cheaper, fast food no fuss, and usually tastes very good. That's why it makes it very hard to be a Heatlh Food Junkie! LOL! ;-)

I can agree with you, thinking about death doesn't make me sad either, but losing people because of it does make me sad too!! I wonder about the same. Are we just dust in the wind or do we continue to live on in other forms? Something we Really have no definitive proof of! I'd like to think we continue to live in other forms! But, who knows? I Really wish we could live on with our loved ones again who passed and experience a euphoric state of being! But again, who knows??

I Couldn't Agree More!!!!

It's Sad that your apartment building Doesn't recyle! Mine does. It doesn't take much to clean and seperate the glass items, plastics, cans and metal, and paper and cardboard items. We just bag up the regular garbage in our kitchen and drop it down the shoot in our hall. We have a seperate garbage can in our kitchen for the recycling items that we bring down to the gearbage room and and put the items in the marked garbage cans there. It's not a big deal. It Should be done Everywhere! When I lived on Long Island we had the same type of thing. We had 2 garbge cans outside of our house, for the same purpose. The garbage men did the seperating of the items in the back of the garbage truck from our recyleables can when they did the pick up. Again, it doesn't take much!! I Agree with what you said, it Sickens me too what happens to the garbage that Isn't recyled!!!

It Sickens me that Our Country doesn't follow Sweden, Cananda, and some other countries in the respect that you mentioned here!!! We Certainly Could!! But, our Leaders have a Different agenda!! :-(( Greed Rules their ways!!

This Baffles me too!!!! It's Sickening!!!!

WOW!! I read the story of "Carmine". How Disgusting and Disturbing!!! The Story made me flabbergasted Too!!! And the FDA declined to ban the use of the extract since it found no evidence of a “significant hazard” to the overall population. WHAT???

Re: "Ironically, there are alternatives to carmine that are non insect based like grape skins which definitely have less “gross” factor for consumption or use in cosmetics we apply to our skin.  Personally, I really don’t care if the FDA has approved Carmine for human consumption, I don’t want it in my food or on my face! "

I don’t want it in my food or on my body in any way either!!!

Re" Carmine is actually made from dried ground up red beetles. And it takes alot of these little bugs to make carmine.  About 70,000 of them to be exact to equal just one pound of extract.  In fact, the part of the insect that contains the most carmine is the abdomen. This is where the fertilized eggs of the Cochineal are stored.. Thru the manufacturing process, the abdomens and eggs are separated from the rest of the body. They are in turn ground into a powder, then cooked, filtered and what is left is pure carmine- a very pretty deep red color. "

Made me feel nauseated Too!!!!

I wish my apartment starts to recycle like yours does, BB Brian J.!

& I just can't seem to avoid carmine.. -_- it's everywhere from cosmetics, paint, and food. I know there are live bacteria in yogurt, but there are dead bugs in my strawberry yogurt as well! D:

Here is a site I check out from to time that teaches consumers how to recycle what and where: Recycle Bank

What do you mean red bugs are killed for red dye? Like hair color? So I guess I'll stop dying my hair red from now on! Thanks for letting me know this information! :-)

I Hope your apartment starts to recycle too, Candy O!!! It should be done everywhere! I've been using a Brita Pitcher for a long time now to filter the water we use for drinking etc. The water from the tap is Horrid here! So, the Brita Pitcher works good for that! It saves on buying bottled water and no plastic water bottles to recycle!!

I hear Mayor Bloomberg is trying to stop the use of Styrofoam Cups and Plates.  Interesting.

http://reason.com/blog/2013/11/25/mayor-bloombergs-final-act-ban-pl...

Yes, it seems that Carmine is everywhere!! There are dead bugs in your strawberry yogurt as well!! YUK!! LOL!

Looks like a Good Site!! Recycle Bank! :-)

LOL Sadie! Really!! Candy O gave us some Really Good information!!! :-)

Well one good thing that happened with my building is that since it has new management, they put out recycling bins. But of course, they had to even it out by cutting all the trees in the parking lot... the trees are like over 20 years old.
